The term Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is just a very library-ish way to describe the process of borrowing books from other libraries. If the Westport Library doesn’t have a volume you desire, there is a good chance that another library in the Clinton Essex Library System does. If not, we can look further afield for you, searching all the library’s in the North Country Library System. This greater area encompasses SUNY’s, Universities, School Libraries, and more.
How do I get an Interlibrary Loan?
The simplest method for you, the borrower, is to ask the library staff to make the request on your behalf. If the item exists within the Clinton Essex Franklin Library System the library staff can immediately tell you if it is available for loan. It can take anything from one week to many more weeks to get the requested item. It all depends on how in demand the item is. Requests are processed on a “first requested, first supplied” basis. The library staff can let you know the status of your request.
If you are a do-it-yourself sort of person, you can order books online with your Westport Library Card 14 digit number and PIN number. More information here.
If the Clinton Essex Franklin Library System cannot supply the desired item, the library staff will search throughout the North Country Library System, and if they find the item, will request it for you.
How will I know when an item I requested has arrived?
You will receive a phone call as soon as a requested item arrives at the library. For that reason, when making a request please make sure that the library has a valid, up-to-date phone number.
I can’t pick up my requested item just yet. Will you hold it for me?
The library can hold a requested item for a maximum of ten days. If you don’t pick it up in that time frame, and we don’t hear from you, the item will be returned to the owning library.
Can I renew Interlibrary Loan items?
Usually you can renew an interlibrary loan item at least once. It really depends on the owning library. The library staff can do the renewal for you…just ask.
Where do I return the Interlibrary Loan item?
Best practice is to return it to the library where you checked the item out. This practice ensures that your record is correctly updated and you don’t incur fines.
